Join TO for a field trip to see Amadeus on Wednesday, 3/4! We will meet in front of the Lyon Recreation Center/Pool at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm departure to Pasadena Playhouse. We should be back on campus around 10:30pm.

Please make sure to sign one of the waivers below before leaving campus on Wednesday.

This experience is for students taking Professor Miya Desjardins' CORE 101: The Aesthetics of Packaging class.

Sushi has always been hand-made for special occasions in Japan. From old times to the present, sushi is made with vegetables or fish that are fresh in season. It’s not necessary to spend a fortune on sushi ingredients. That’s the true spirit of homemade sushi! You’ll be learning the most essential skills of sushi-making as well as somewhat more elaborate dishes from regional & traditional sushi to a kaiseki inspired dish. This event will take place with the guidance of FoodStory. Founded in Los Angeles in 2011, Foodstory is a culinary studio and cultural bridge dedicated to sharing the richness of Japanese cuisine.

Oppenheimer was adapted by Nolan from a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005). The film concerns itself primarily with the apparent conflicts influencing Oppenheimer’s motivations and how he and the world grappled with his legacy. It weaves a story across multiple time periods, following Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) from his university study to his directorship of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project.

Apr 15, 2026: Furoshiki Workshop at WPH

This class is for students in Professor Miya Desjardins' CORE 101: The Aesthetics of Packaging class.

With the guidance of an expert instructor, students will learn about the historical background of furoshiki, as well as the etiquette of Japanese gift culture that shaped different furoshiki styles and their meaning. Especially when used for gifts, subtle details of furoshiki can convey respect and care that go far beyond pleasing aesthetics. Next, the hands-on practice session will cover practical techniques starting with basic knotting and cover some specific wrapping techniques as well, such as fashioning a bag for the farmers’ market, or packaging rectangular objects like lunchboxes, or stylishly wrapping up a bottle for a home party.

Participants will come away with their very own furoshiki cloth to take home, and the knowledge to continue using in their daily life as a way to reduce waste and channel the versatile beauty of this tradition. With a single cloth, sometimes known as “the infinite square”, furoshiki can empower us to weave ancient sustainability into our lifestyles in a way that’s never been more relevant.

Apr 16, 2026: Research Boat Trip at San Pedro Coast

This Research Trip is only for students taking Professor Lloyd's CORE 103: Underworlds and Intraterrestrials.

Students will be given a first-hand experience of real-life geological discovery. They will learn how to sample the deep-sea from a ship, and they will make measurements that may show us where these natural geological methane seeps exist. Students are able to explore themes of how field work is conducted, and how exploration has driven scientific discovery, especially in the geosciences where Earth must be explored to be understood.

Located on Mount Wilson, a 5,710-foot peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, California, the Observatory was conceived and founded by George Ellery Hale in 1904.The home of some of the most important telescopes in the development of modern astronomy – including the two largest telescopes of their time – it is a site of significant scientific and Los Angeles history.
